The EV Charger Installation Process — Step by Step

1

Free Photo-Based Quote

Simply send us photos of your switchboard and the area where you'd like the charger installed, plus the approximate cable run distance. We'll recommend the right charger for your EV and usage patterns, then provide a clear, fixed-price quote remotely — no visit needed.

2

Charger & Materials Sourced

Once you're happy with the quote, we source your charger and all the electrical materials needed. We can supply the charger or install one you've already purchased. Either way, we'll make sure everything is compatible and ready.

3

Installation Day

Our registered electrician arrives at the agreed time. We mount the charger unit, run the dedicated cable from your switchboard, install the new circuit breaker, and make all electrical connections. Most installations take 2–4 hours.

4

Test, Handover & Certificate

We test the charger with your vehicle, walk you through the app or timer settings, and issue your Certificate of Compliance (CoC) as required by NZ law. You're good to charge — starting tonight.

What Happens During the Installation

Most people are surprised at how quick and clean the process is. A standard home EV charger installation in Christchurch typically takes between 2 and 4 hours from arrival to completion. Here's a more detailed look at what actually happens.

Switchboard Assessment

From the photos you send us, we assess your switchboard. We need to confirm there's capacity for a dedicated 32-amp circuit — that's what a standard Level 2 charger runs on. Most modern switchboards in Christchurch homes have spare capacity. Older fuse boards may need upgrading, and we'll tell you about that upfront before you commit.

If your switchboard needs upgrading, we can do that at the same time. It's not uncommon and it's worth doing — an upgraded switchboard is safer, more capable, and adds value to your property.

Running the Cable

We run a dedicated cable from your switchboard to the charger location. In most Christchurch garages and carports, this is a fairly short run through the ceiling or wall cavity. We keep the installation as tidy as possible — conduit is used where cables are exposed, and penetrations through walls or ceilings are properly sealed.

If the run is particularly long or complex (e.g., from a separate building or across the property), we'll factor this into your quote so there are no surprises on the day.

Mounting and Wiring the Charger

The charger is wall-mounted at a height that's easy to reach when you're standing beside your parked car. We position it so the cable reaches your charging port comfortably without being stretched. The charger is wired to its dedicated circuit, tested for correct polarity and earth continuity, then powered up.

App Setup & Handover

Smart chargers connect to your home Wi-Fi and are controlled via a smartphone app. We'll help you set up the app, connect the charger to your network, and configure any scheduling or energy management features. If you have solar, we'll configure the charger to prioritise solar export when available.

Once everything's working and you're comfortable with how it all operates, we issue your Certificate of Compliance and you're done.

Common Questions About the Process

Yes, briefly. We need to isolate the power to work safely on the switchboard when installing the new circuit. This is normally less than 15–30 minutes for a straightforward installation. We'll let you know in advance and work as quickly as possible to minimise disruption.
We'll confirm this in your photo-based quote, not after we've started work. If you need a switchboard upgrade, we'll quote for both the upgrade and the charger installation at the same time. In some cases, a smaller charger (e.g., 16A instead of 32A) can be installed without an upgrade — we'll discuss your options clearly.
In most cases, no — a standard home Level 2 charger at 7.4 kW doesn't require pre-notification to Orion (the Canterbury network). However, if you're installing multiple chargers or a higher-powered unit (e.g., 22 kW three-phase), notification may be required. We'll handle this as part of the installation process.
A Certificate of Compliance (CoC) is a legal document confirming the electrical work was done correctly and safely by a registered electrician. In New Zealand, it's required for any fixed electrical installation. It protects your home insurance, is required if you sell the property, and proves the work is safe. Never use an electrician who doesn't issue a CoC — it's a legal requirement.
