The Challenge

Mark and Pam had been driving their 2019 Nissan Leaf 40 for close to two years, charging entirely through the standard 10A socket in their Riccarton garage. Filling the 40kWh battery from flat required 17 hours — so they often went to sleep with only a partial charge and occasionally woke to find the overnight window had not been enough. On Christchurch's cold winter evenings, running the heat pump and the Leaf through the same garage circuit would sometimes trip the breaker, leaving the car flat by morning. The Outcome

Mark and Pam's Nissan Leaf 40 now charges to full in approximately six hours — less than a third of the time it previously took via the standard outlet. The dedicated circuit has completely resolved the breaker-tripping issue that had been a recurring winter headache. The Leaf is plugged in each evening on arrival home and sits fully charged well before midnight, regardless of which other appliances are running. Answers to Common Type 1 EV Charger Questions

Technically yes — a Type 2 to Type 1 adapter cable allows it. That said, our standard recommendation is to fit a dedicated Type 1 unit, preferably a tethered model with the Type 1 cable permanently attached to the wall charger. There is no adapter to locate each time, the connector spec is correct from end to end, and the installation looks neater. Some owners prefer a universal charger with a Type 2 wall socket and carry their own Type 1 cable — we can install that configuration too if it suits you.

Not at all. CHAdeMO is your DC rapid-charging port, used at public stations for a quick refill while you are out and about. Home charging always uses the AC Type 1 port — the five-pin inlet — which is what we wire the charger to. The two systems operate entirely independently of each other. DC fast charging at home is neither practical nor necessary for Leaf owners doing normal daily mileage.

Absolutely, for two solid reasons. The dedicated circuit — running from your switchboard to the charger position — is reusable when you make the switch. At that point we simply swap the charging unit for a Type 2 model at a cost well below a full installation. Meanwhile, the improved charging speed and convenience you experience between now and then more than covers the outlay.
