Every Step of Your Ilam EV Charger Installation

All six steps described clearly — from first enquiry through to a live charger and compliance certificate in hand.

1

Get in Touch

Call021 194 9138, text us, or complete the online form. Tell us your EV make and model, where you'd like the charger positioned — garage wall, carport post, or outside wall — and your Ilam address. The whole initial contact takes just a few minutes.

2

Send Through Some Photos

We'll ask you to photograph your consumer unit with the cover off showing all the breakers, the wall or area where the charger will go, and the approximate cable path between the two. For most Ilam homes, that's everything we need — no preliminary site visit and no charge for the assessment.

3

Get Your Fixed-Price Quote

You'll receive a detailed written quote within 24 hours, covering labour, all materials, cabling, conduit, the 32A dedicated circuit, charger mounting, app setup, and the Certificate of Compliance. Every line is fixed before you accept — switchboard upgrades, if needed, are priced upfront, not added as a surprise on installation day.

4

Accept the Quote and Book a Date

Once you're happy with the quote, accepting it takes a single reply. We'll then confirm a date together — weekdays or Saturdays are both available. Ilam bookings typically fall within 2–5 working days of acceptance, and we'll send a reminder the evening before.

5

The Installation

EWRB-registered electricians arrive with all materials and no surprises. We run the dedicated 32A circuit, mount and wire the charger, install conduit or trunking where cables are exposed, fit the CT clamp for DLB if included, and get the unit online. Most Ilam installs are done inside 3–6 hours, and we clean up fully before leaving.

6

Handover and Certificate of Compliance

We take you through the finished installation before we pack up. You'll know how to start a manual charge, configure an overnight schedule to take advantage of off-peak tariffs, and check energy usage in the app. A live charge test is completed with your EV. Your Certificate of Compliance is issued on-site and emailed the same day under the NZ Electricity Act 1992.

Everything Covered in Every Installation

Every item in your quote is delivered on the day. Nothing is added or removed once you've accepted — this is what every installation covers:

Charger Unit (If We Supply)

Where we supply the charger, the unit is included in your quoted price. We select from Evnex, Wallbox, Zappi, Tesla Wall Connector, and Smart EV Charger based on your vehicle and home situation before ordering.

Dedicated 32A Circuit

A new 32A circuit is run from your consumer unit directly to the charger — correctly rated cable, conduit and junction boxes as needed, and a new MCB fitted to your switchboard. Entirely separate from existing circuits.

Wall Mounting & Termination

The unit is wall-mounted at the right height with all wiring terminated to spec. External cable penetrations are sealed, and outdoor or semi-exposed locations receive full IP-rated weatherproofing treatment.

DLB & CT Clamp Installation

When DLB is included, we fit the CT clamp onto the mains feed at your switchboard, pair it with the charger, and configure the correct load thresholds. The charger then adjusts output automatically whenever other appliances draw significant current.

Network Connection & App Setup

We connect the charger to your home network, install and configure the manufacturer app on your phone, and set an off-peak schedule matched to your electricity tariff. You know exactly how every feature works before we leave.

Certificate of Compliance (CoC)

New Zealand law requires a Certificate of Compliance for all new electrical installations, including EV chargers, under the Electricity Act 1992. We issue one for every job we complete and email you a digital copy the same day. Work without a CoC is not legally compliant.

What We Evaluate Before Sending Your Quote

Photo-based quoting works because we review the right information. Here's what we assess from your images and why each factor shapes your price:

  • 1
    Switchboard Capacity & Condition

We assess your board's rated capacity, available MCB positions, and current load to determine whether a 7.4kW charger can be safely added. The majority of Ilam homes built after the early 1990s pass without issue — particularly when DLB is included. If an upgrade is required, it's costed into the quote before you commit.

  • 2
    Cable Route & Distance

The distance between your consumer unit and the charger location affects cable sizing and overall materials cost. We price against the actual cable run for your specific Ilam property rather than applying a standard allowance.

  • 3
    Mounting Wall & Location

Wall construction — timber frame, masonry, or cavity brick — affects fixing methods and cable entry. We assess the proposed charger position and any weatherproofing requirements to confirm the right approach before quoting, so there are no unexpected discoveries on the day.

  • 4
    Vehicle & Charger Compatibility

Connector type (Type 2 or Type 1), your vehicle's onboard AC charging limit, and the presence of solar all shape the charger recommendation. We verify compatibility first so the model we quote is genuinely right for your vehicle and home situation.

A Typical Installation Day — Hour by Hour

A typical Ilam EV charger installation from arrival to sign-off. Timing depends on cable run and switchboard complexity, but the 3–6 hour range covers most jobs.

8:00 am
Arrival & Site Briefing
We arrive on time, go through the installation plan with you, and walk the switchboard, cable route, and charger location before any work begins.
8:30 am
Pulling the Dedicated Circuit
The new 32A cable is routed from your consumer unit to the charger location — through ceiling voids, wall cavities, or underfloor as the layout requires. Conduit or surface trunking covers any exposed sections for a neat, protected result.
10:30 am
Charger Mounting & Termination
The charger unit is secured at the confirmed position, wiring terminated to manufacturer specification, and polarity plus earth continuity verified before the circuit is brought live.
11:30 am
Board Work & DLB Setup
The new MCB is fitted to your consumer unit. For DLB installations, the CT clamp is installed on the mains feed inside the board. Only the affected circuits are isolated — the rest of your home stays powered.
12:00 pm
Energising, Testing & App Setup
The circuit is live, a charge session confirmed with your EV connected, and DLB response verified where fitted. Manufacturer app installed on your phone with overnight schedule and off-peak window set up.
1:00 pm
Handover & CoC Issuance
Walk-through of the finished system, then CoC issued on-site and emailed to you. Work area cleaned and left tidy. Charge tonight, full battery in the morning.

Which Home Charger Suits Your Setup?

Which charger suits your Ilam home depends on your EV, your board's capacity, and whether solar is in the picture. We cover this in the assessment — here's a quick overview:

Type 2 Smart Charger + DLB Most Popular

The standard recommendation for Ilam households. A 7.4kW Type 2 charger with DLB is compatible with every new EV on the NZ market, avoids switchboard upgrades in most cases, and enables overnight scheduling on cheaper off-peak electricity.

Works with: Tesla, BYD, Hyundai, Kia, MG, BMW, Audi, VW, Volvo, Mercedes, Polestar, and all new-market NZ EVs.

Type 1 Charger (J1772)

Required for older Japanese-import EVs with a J1772 socket. A Level 2 Type 1 charger delivers three to four times the speed of a standard power point — a significant day-to-day improvement for Leaf owners and PHEV drivers.

Suits: Nissan Leaf (all generations), Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Nissan e-NV200, and other J1772 vehicles.

Solar-Ready Smart Charger

If your Ilam home already generates solar, a charger with solar integration — Zappi, Evnex E2 Plus, or Smart EV Charger in ECO mode — diverts surplus generation to your EV rather than exporting it, reducing running costs significantly on sunny days.

Ideal for: Homes with existing solar panels looking to maximise self-consumption and lower running costs.

Will My Switchboard Need Upgrading?

Most Ilam homeowners ask this first. For the majority: no upgrade is needed. If yours is the exception, the cost appears in your written quote before you book — it won't arrive as a surprise on installation day.

Properties built from the mid-1990s onwards typically have modern consumer units with sufficient capacity for a 7.4kW charger. DLB eliminates most remaining risk by monitoring live household load and automatically reducing charger output when other appliances are running.

A switchboard upgrade is genuinely required in only a minority of cases — older fuse-board homes or properties already drawing close to their mains limit. When one is needed, it's priced into your quote and completed in the same visit as the charger installation.

Switchboard Upgrade Info
Upgrade typically NOT needed — when
  • Modern consumer unit with at least one spare MCB slot
  • Single-phase mains service rated 63A or above
  • A DLB-equipped charger is being installed
  • Existing household load is comfortably below the board's rated limit
  • Mains cable between meter and switchboard is 16mm² or heavier
Upgrade likely needed — when
  • Older rewireable fuse board without MCB protection
  • Single-phase service restricted to 40A or below
  • Consumer unit has no available circuit positions
  • Property already runs heat pumps, a spa pool, or high-draw workshop equipment
  • Planning to install an 11kW three-phase charger on a single-phase supply

Questions About the Installation Process — Answered

Answers to the questions Ilam homeowners ask us most frequently before getting started.

In the vast majority of cases, yes. Three photos cover most Ilam jobs: your switchboard with the cover open, the proposed charger wall, and the cable route between them. If something is unclear we may ask for an additional photo or short video. A physical visit is only arranged for genuinely complex properties — unusual switchboard access, very long runs, or masonry that needs hands-on assessment.

Most Ilam installations take 3–6 hours. A straightforward garage job with a short cable run often comes in at the lower end. Longer runs, masonry walls, or a switchboard upgrade alongside the charger push it toward 5–7 hours. The entire scope is completed in a single visit.

We need you present at the start for the pre-work walkthrough and at the end for handover. In between, you're free to carry on with your day. We'll call if anything unexpected comes up, though it rarely does. The rest of the home's power stays on throughout.

No — only the circuits being worked on are isolated. The rest of your Ilam home keeps running normally throughout the installation. The one brief exception is when we open the board to fit the new MCB: typically 5–10 minutes when several circuits are off. We'll give you advance notice before we do that.

Most Ilam bookings fall within 2–5 working days of accepting the quote. If a specific charger model needs to be ordered, supplier lead times are typically 2–4 business days. We confirm the first available slot when you accept. Saturdays are available at the same rate — no weekend surcharge.

Three shots cover most Ilam jobs: (1) your switchboard with the cover off showing all breakers, (2) the charger wall or area, and (3) the general cable path between them. If you're not sure what to photograph, call us — we'll walk you through it in a couple of minutes.

A Certificate of Compliance confirms that new electrical work was completed by a registered electrician to the AS/NZS 3000 standard. It's a legal requirement under the NZ Electricity Act 1992 for all new installations, including EV chargers. Without one, the work is unlawful, home insurance cover may be affected, and conveyancing complications can arise when you sell. We include a CoC in every job.

Within reason, yes. Your preferred position affects the cable run (and price), the circuit route, and structural suitability. We review it during the photo assessment and flag any alternative that would reduce cost or look better. On installation day, exact height and position are confirmed with you before any drilling begins.

Our workmanship is fully warranted. Any fault traced to our installation is corrected at no cost to you. For hardware faults with the charger unit itself, we'll guide you through the manufacturer's warranty process. Call021 194 9138 and we'll sort it out.

Standard installation labour is $950 incl. GST for cable runs up to 10 metres. That price includes the dedicated 32A circuit, all cabling and conduit, charger mounting, DLB setup where applicable, app configuration, and the Certificate of Compliance. The charger unit is quoted separately — from $799 incl. GST when we supply it. See our pricing page for a complete breakdown.
