Not all electricians are qualified to install EV chargers in New Zealand. Here's what to check before you book — so you don't end up with an unsafe, non-compliant installation that could void your insurance or damage your EV.
Talk to a Licensed InstallerAll electrical work in NZ must be carried out by an EWRB-registered electrician. Check the EWRB register at ewrb.govt.nz before hiring anyone. We're registered and happy to provide our licence number.
Make sure the installer is authorised to supply and install your preferred brand — Wallbox, Zappi, Ocular, JuiceBox, or Tesla Wall Connector — and that the charger suits your EV's connector type (Type 2 or CCS).
A reputable installer will always provide a written, itemised quote before starting work. This should cover the charger, cabling, any switchboard work, and GST. Avoid anyone who asks you to pay before you've seen a quote.
A Certificate of Compliance (CoC) is a legal requirement for every new EV charger installation in NZ. If your installer can't or won't issue one, walk away — the installation is not legal under the NZ Electricity Act 1992.
Rob and Karen had been relying on a standard 10A outlet in their Burnside garage since taking delivery of their Tesla Model Y Long Range. A full charge from flat took over 65 hours — impractical for daily use. They adapted by plugging in each night and carefully monitoring range, but the constant anxiety of managing a partially charged car quickly wore thin. They contacted a general electrical company who quoted $3,200 for a basic charger installation that included what the company described as a mandatory partial switchboard upgrade. The advice felt vague — no assessment or load calculation was offered to support it. Uncertain about charger brands and unwilling to overpay for work they weren't sure was needed, they searched specifically for an EV charger specialist before committing to anything.
Rob sent us photos of the switchboard, garage, and the proposed cable route. We assessed the 1996 board remotely and confirmed what we expected: it had a modern consumer unit with a spare circuit position and sufficient capacity for a DLB charger — the partial upgrade the other company had quoted was not required. We recommended the Wallbox Pulsar Plus 7.4kW with DLB as the right fit for the Tesla Model Y and the home's load profile. A CT clamp was fitted on the mains at the switchboard, feeding the Wallbox real-time current data so it can automatically throttle the Tesla's charge rate whenever household demand is high and ramp back to full output once appliances switch off for the night. A dedicated 32A circuit was run from the switchboard through the ceiling cavity to the garage wall. The installation was completed in half a day. We configured the Wallbox app to schedule overnight charging on Rob and Karen's cheapest off-peak tariff, and walked them through the app before we left. A Certificate of Compliance was issued on completion.
Rob and Karen's Tesla Model Y Long Range now charges overnight and is full every morning without fail. At 7.4kW the 80.5kWh battery reaches capacity in just under eleven hours — a comfortable fit within their overnight scheduling window. The constant range anxiety that had accompanied daily 10A outlet charging is completely gone. Their home charging cost runs to approximately $38–42 per month on the off-peak tariff, saving $145 per month compared to what equivalent public fast charging would have cost. The DLB system manages the household load invisibly — no tripped breakers, no manual intervention, no adjustments needed since day one. The partial switchboard upgrade quoted at $3,200 was never carried out and was never needed. Rob uses the Wallbox app to review each session's cost and energy delivered; Karen notes the most meaningful change is simply that the car is always ready — the charging routine they'd adapted around a 10A outlet no longer exists.
"We had no idea what we needed — we just knew the overnight cable wasn't working. The advice was completely jargon-free, the charger recommendation was spot-on, and it was done in half a day. The Wallbox app is brilliant for scheduling off-peak charging." — Rob M., Burnside, Christchurch
